TRANSLATION: Boyar's dance

SOURCE: Dick Oakes learned this dance from Sunni Bloland who learned it during her 1967-68 research trip to Romania from Anca Guirchescu, dance ethnographer at the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore in Bucareşti (Bucharest). Ms. Bloland introduced the dance to folk dancers in the United States at the 1969 Balkan / Near-East Festival in Portland, Oregon.

BACKGROUND: A boyer (boier) is a nobleman or gentleman farmer, one of a privileged class in Romania. Hora Boerească (Boierească) is from the small village of Răzmireşti, about 20 kilometers northeast of Alexandria toward Bucareşti (Bucharest) in southeastern Romania. The music, recorded in the village of Răzmireşti, is played by the local musicians.

FORMATION: Closed cir of M and W with hands joined and held at shldr height, elbows bent, in "W" pos.

METER/RHYTHM: 2/4
